Not everyone can align

Nested-boxes.jpg

We can think about value alignment as a set of nested boxes.  Often in our career we find ourselves not quite fitting in, not quite sure we are in the right place.  Sometimes as the supervisor we have to ask that of our employees.  Using the picture here, imagine you and your values are inside the smallest purple box. The smallest purple box might be your team.  Within the purple box you have some wiggle room to find the right place for you.  Maybe that box is too small and you can’t find yourself in there.  Maybe within your company–a bigger box with more wiggle room–you can find the right fit.  If you find that you can’t fit within the company box, maybe another company in your industry.  If that doesn’t work–you get the idea.
